I Wayan Gama is one of Keliki’s young maestros. Starting his career as a professional painter in 2002, he and several villages founded a painting school for children to keep Keliki traditional painting skills and culture alive. In this painting, I Wayan Gama depicts Dewi Sri, who is revered by the Balinese people as the benevolent goddess of rice and prosperity. Dewi Sri grew to become the most beautiful goddess in the entire kingdom of heaven. But she’s not just a pretty face. She also intelligent, kind, generous and very humble. Using the shape of the island of Bali as a visual landmark in his paintings, I Wayan Gama also “talks” about environmental degradation, uncontrolled tourism, corrupt officials and greedy inventors, as well as his interpretation of the spirituality of Bali Island. Every penny from purchasing a painting at the I Wayan Gama Painting School goes directly to the child who painted it.
